Baiia would not be what it is today without the team of women behind it. We work tirelessly to make sure we’re showing up and serving our beautiful community - some of you we’ve even formed friendships with - so we figured it’s about time we put a face to our names and officially ‘e-meet’ you! Introducing Baiia’s fab five..
Amber - Founder, Director & Designer
Amber is the Founder and Creative Director of Baiia. She spends most of her days thinking up all marketing strategies for Baiia, content planning, working with suppliers and dreaming up new designs & product innovation. Between those tasks, she's helping with any direction and guidance the team might need on a daily basis, and is there to keep ‘the gals’ inspired and committed to our mission: creating unique and flattering swimwear that empowers all women and honours sustainable practice. When she’s not working or designing, you can find her stocking her fridge up with pre-made margaritas, looking up everyone’s Myers Briggs personality types, or planning her next Noosa getaway.
Spending her earliest years in the Solomon Islands, Amber’s fondest and most impactful memories have always been in a swimsuit. Knowing already the power of clothing from her experiences at a young age, she went on to study fashion design & technology at Tafe in her late teens, and later completed a degree in Marketing so she could combine the two to pursue her dream: Baiia!
Mine was a little different because… I made it! So my first experience was really exciting because I’d finally created something that worked for my figure. Then of course over time, it’s evolved to work for more women’s figures. When you create something and you see it come to life and get to put it on, it’s always a really amazing moment.
There’d be so many favourites!! But I have a soft spot for the Monaco, even though I don’t wear it the most. The Bahamas, and Ipanema too.. Maybe the Mossman? I really can’t answer that. I like to wear my wrapsuit as a bodysuit, usually with linen pants or skirt so they’re a full outfit. I don’t really have a favourite way of wearing the suit itself but I love that you can do that if you want to.
I have many! When I first started making swimwear I made myself a bikini in year 12 for Schoolies. Several years onward and I wish someone had told me that my nipple was out almost all week! Luckily I’ve perfected my design, so no more nip-slips from me anymore. Sorry boys.
All of them! I wrote them so again it’s hard, but I think number three if I had to choose: “Be bold. Commit. Get it done.” Showing up, following through, having integrity with what you say you’re going to do and you do it no matter what. Being patient with yourself when circumstances are difficult, obviously, but I think that’s the most exciting one for me and resonates most with me for where I am with life now.
Christina - 2IC. Marketing & Brand Assistant
Christina is the Marketing and Brand Assistant at Baiia; she’s been here for nearly two years! She spends her day doing influencer outreach and searching for the next big thing, along with helping out Amber and the girls where she can! Growing up in numerous different places from New Zealand to Thursday Island, then to her hometown Cairns (so close to the rainforest and beaches ) she definitely is familiar with the beauty of travelling. She has always had a connection to fashion and loves being able to express herself through her personal style. She loves creating a good playlist, a day at the beach, platters at the park with friends and a good home-cooking session with her sisters. Fun fact: Christina is a committed Drake fan and has a necklace that says “Champagne Mami”. She thanks Beyoncé for being a role model for confidence when she was little.
My first Baiia wrapsuit was gifted to me by Amber after I completed my internship here, and was also a 21st birthday present. I chose the Banksia and instantly fell in love. I remember taking it home and trying it on (I honestly think now I actually put it on the wrong way at first but was still strutting my stuff like it was made for me). This feeling didn’t fade and once I adjusted it to wear correctly I ran out showing my roommate and she was amazed how perfectly it fit and how pretty it was!
I love every single style but I think my favourite one is always going to be the Banksia because it’s just so different and pretty. I think it’s a very unique design. Second after that would be the Monaco because I love red, but all of them have grown on me. I used to style it with a halter neck at the back but now I wear it with the waist tie as a bow on the side.
When I was a little girl growing up on Thursday Island, I used to wear a lot of secondhand clothing that came to me from my Auntie. I used to go out at ten years old with shirts saying phrases like “Sexy Gal” and I never even thought about it! I was so little that I didn’t even think anything of it, walking down the streets making these poor elderly people so worried but I was rocking it!
“Be bold. Commit. Get it done.” I probably resonate with that one the most, because I think it’s important to finish what you started. Making a promise to yourself and constantly showing up really means a lot to me. You might not always feel up to it but if you’re just pushing yourself to keep that promise to yourself, that's what matters. I always try and take little steps and do my part while being conscious of the people my actions will impact!
Kate - Warehouse Manager & In-house Seamstress
Kate is our Warehouse Manager and in-house seamstress. She spends all day making sure your Baiia suits arrive safe and in perfect condition. She’s a mum of three beautiful girls, and is the unofficial Baiia office mum too! She loves coffee, travelling, and chasing joy. Kate likes to say that she’ll never do anything that doesn’t bring her joy, and sticks to it!
As a dressmaker, Kate knows the value of a well made garment. She loves feeling fabric and seeing how it drapes on the body. She loves being a part of a community that is able to directly influence how a person looks and feels, including herself! She’s an empowering force and we love her energy in the office.
In the office with all the girls I tried one on! I actually tried a size smaller than what I probably would’ve gone for if i hadn’t been sitting in the office listening about how tight they are supposed to be. It felt super tight but everyone said I looked fabulous and I know from working with the Wrapsuits that they will soften. I usually wear a size 16 for comfort but I should be wearing a size 14 according to my measurements. It definitely fits true to size, even if you don’t think it does!
The Monaco is my favourite and it’s the one that I have. I wear it on the print side but I haven’t been able to rock it at the beach yet as it’s been too cold!
I have no idea! I don’t really have an embarrassing moment, I just own it all. My whole life is an embarrassing moment.
“Be the pioneers of compassion in women’s fashion”. Because I’m also a freelance dressmaker and this is all about what I do, empathising with women + stepping into their shoes. I love to be a part of creating something that helps women to feel their best.
Lani - Customer Service Assistant
Lani is a Customer Service Agent and Administrator at Baiia. She is a freelancer who likes to say she works from ‘anywhere’ — It could be at the comfort of her home or a beach in Bali! She’s currently in the Philippines and has been with Baiia for almost 2 years! She and Shaneen manage customer service together, and she is also responsible for all office admin. What she loves most about Baiia is its values, and how we are all about supporting women. She’s a mum of one beautiful girl.
She prefers summer over any other season and chooses beach trips most of the time. She owns more than a dozen swimsuits but would now trade them all for a Baiia wrapsuit! — “I got a Tanami for my birthday suit last November and was so ready to sport it in the Phi Phi Islands but then Covid happened!💔” Lani has a serious travel bug and is definitely looking forward to hopping on a flight sometime soon.
It felt so good, the quality, texture, how it hugged my body! I didn’t really think I could pull it off because I have small boobs but the suit creates the illusion & it’s true what customers says; it’s makes you feel very feminine 🥰
I wear it using the tie to make a ribbon at the shoulder straps. Kyooot!
You don't wanna know. Hehe!
“Know what’s important, think of tomorrow.” I’m passionate about my work and on how I can provide a better future for my daughter. Baiia’s advocacy in sustainability and culture is my ideal work environment, it makes me happy I am part of this team.
Shaneen - Head of Customer Relations & Copy Whiz
Shaneen is our Head of Customer Relations at Baiia. She spends her days glued to the computer answering your emails and live chats, as well as writing blogs, updating website copy and coming up with some super slick Instagram captions. She and Lani work closely together, making sure everything in Customer Service works like a well-oiled machine!
Shaneen grew up on the Gold Coast right next to the beach, so she knows her way around a good swimsuit. When she’s not in the office, she spends her free time knitting anywhere she can (at home, at brunch, on the train…) or curled up with a good book. She’s also well known around the office for always sending pictures of her cat at every available opportunity.
My first experience with a Baiia Wrapsuit was a little unusual because I was so unsure of my size. I’d only been here a few months at the time so I thought I was a size 8, but when I tried it on Kate, our packer and in-house seamstress, suggested that I go down a size. I definitely didn’t believe her at first because the size 8 already felt quite firm, but she was so right! It was definitely very tight when I first put it on, particularly around the hips. I did have to do a bit of a wiggle to get into the size 6 but once it was on it felt perfect.
My favourite style is the Mimosa currently, I love the mustard tones and I’m quite pale so I think it works for me to have a little colour. I usually wear it reversed tied into a deep V, sometimes as a bodysuit with high waisted pants.
On my last day of work at my cafe job before I moved to Brisbane, I fell up the stairs while holding two plates of french toast with ice cream!! Luckily the food was fine, but I was not. Everyone in the whole downstairs area of the cafe saw and I nearly fainted from the pain and embarrassment! I’m such a big klutz though so I do stuff like that all the time. Stairs are not my friend.
It’s so hard to choose but I think I identify most with the second value: “Know what’s important, think of tomorrow”. I always wanted a career and life that has value and meaning, both to myself and to the world. I am really passionate about sustainability in all areas but particularly in fashion, and it makes me feel so proud to work for a company that has sustainability and ethics at the forefront, and it’s a bonus that we help so many women to feel their best every day!
